An international authority on healthcare quality and improvement travelled from Farnham to Fareham to hear about projects which are transforming NHS services across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Surrey.
Professor Don Berwick, who has been an advisor to both a British Prime Minister and an American President, visited the headquarters of two clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) which are part of the Hampshire CCG Partnership.
Accompanied by Prof Chris Ham, the Chief Executive of the King’s Fund, Prof Berwick visited Fort Southwick, Fareham, home of Fareham and Gosport and South Eastern Hampshire CCGs on Monday (November 6); and was in Farnham, Surrey, part of North East Hampshire and Farnham CCG on Tuesday (November 7).
At both sites, local GP clinical leads talked about how NHS England-funded ‘Vanguard’ programmes are transforming the way healthcare services are delivered to patients.
Areas covered during Prof Berwick’s visit to Farnham included an overview of the ‘Happy, Healthy, at Home’ new models of care, which includes community ambassadors – local members of the community who help shape how services are designed, mental health safe haven and the Frimley Health and Care Sustainability Transformation Partnership (STP). The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the next steps for new care models across the STPs, using strong GP leadership to drive change across larger geographical areas.
Maggie MacIsaac, Chief Executive of the Hampshire CCG Partnership, said: “We wanted to give Prof Berwick and Prof Ham a good understanding of some of the excellent work which is taking place to improve NHS patient services across south and north Hampshire.
“This included examples of what we have delivered and how we have delivered it. We also wanted to share some of the powerful case studies and stories from our clinical leads, workforce and local communities who are improving and transforming patient services at a time of huge change and opportunity across the NHS.
“It was a great opportunity for us to benefit from Prof Berwick’s experience, and listen to his insights on how best to take these projects forward, making the most of the opportunities available to us working across wider partnerships.”
Prof Berwick is touring Vanguard programmes across the country as part of his work to support the improvement of care and outcomes within the NHS. At the end of the week Prof Berwick will be delivering a speech about his experiences and thoughts on how the new models of care he has seen on his visit can benefit greater numbers of people across the country.
